Description
Stazonex 1 Mg Tablet contains anastrozole 1 mg, a
non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor used in the treatment of hormone-receptor-positive
breast cancer in postmenopausal women. It is manufactured by Abbott.
After the menopause the ovaries no longer produce oestrogen, but small amounts are still made
by converting androgens in fat, muscle and breast tissue, using the enzyme aromatase. Anastrozole
blocks that enzyme, lowering circulating oestrogen and removing the signal that
hormone-receptor-positive tumours depend on.
Licensed use
Anastrozole is used as adjuvant treatment of early hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer,
for advanced disease, and after tamoxifen. The dose is 1 mg once daily, taken at the same time
each day, usually for several years. It is not effective before the menopause,
because in premenopausal women the ovaries remain the main source of oestrogen.
Important safety information
- Bone density. Lowering oestrogen accelerates bone loss and raises the risk of
osteoporosis and fracture. Bone mineral density is usually assessed before and during treatment,
and calcium, vitamin D or a bone-protecting medicine may be advised. - Joint and muscle pain is the most common reason patients struggle with
treatment; it should be discussed rather than endured, as it can often be managed. - Cholesterol may rise and is monitored periodically.
- Hot flushes, fatigue, vaginal dryness, mood change and headache are common.
Stazonex 1 Mg Tablet is a prescription-only medicine and must be used under
oncological supervision. Store below 30 °C, away from moisture and direct sunlight, out of the
reach of children.
