About Trastuzumab
Trastuzumab is a monoclonal antibody that targets the HER2 (human epidermal growth factor receptor 2) protein, used primarily in the treatment of HER2-positive breast cancer and gastric (stomach) cancer. It works by binding to the HER2 receptor on cancer cells, blocking their growth signals and flagging them for destruction by the immune system.
Originally marketed as Herceptin, trastuzumab is administered by intravenous infusion or subcutaneous injection. It is used in early-stage, locally advanced, and metastatic HER2-positive breast cancer, often in combination with chemotherapy agents such as docetaxel or pertuzumab. Multiple biosimilar versions from Indian manufacturers are available, broadening patient access to this essential targeted therapy.
