Description
Lukster 50 Mg Injection contains calcium folinate 50 mg, also
known as calcium leucovorin or folinic acid, supplied as a single vial. It is not an
antifungal medicine.
Calcium folinate is a reduced form of folic acid that cells can use directly, without needing
the enzyme that methotrexate blocks. That gives it two distinct roles in cancer care.
Licensed uses
- Rescue after high-dose methotrexate. Methotrexate is deliberately given at
doses that would damage healthy tissue; calcium folinate is then given at carefully timed
intervals to let normal cells recover. The timing is critical and is set by the
treating team, not by the patient. - With fluorouracil in colorectal cancer. It stabilises the way fluorouracil
binds its target enzyme, increasing the drug’s anti-tumour effect. - Megaloblastic anaemia caused by folate deficiency, where oral folic acid
cannot be used. - It is also used to counteract overdose of, or impaired clearance of, methotrexate and other
folate antagonists.
Important safety information
Calcium folinate must never be given intrathecally. It must not be used as a
substitute for, or given at the same time as, the methotrexate dose itself, since that would
defeat the treatment. When combined with fluorouracil it increases that drug’s toxicity, so
diarrhoea, mouth ulceration and low blood counts are watched for and the fluorouracil dose is
adjusted accordingly. Allergic reactions are uncommon.
Lukster 50 Mg Injection is a prescription-only medicine, administered by a
healthcare professional. Store as directed on the carton, out of the reach of children.
