About Bosentas 62.5 mg Tablets
Bosentas 62.5 mg Tablets contain 62.5 mg of Bosentan per tablet, supplied as a pack of 10 tablets. Bosentan is a dual endothelin receptor antagonist.
How it works
The lining of the lung arteries produces endothelin, a substance that makes those vessels narrow and thicken. Bosentan blocks both receptors endothelin acts on, so the arteries stay wider and the right side of the heart works against less resistance.
What it is used for
Bosentan is used in pulmonary arterial hypertension, to improve exercise capacity and slow the worsening of the condition. This is a different condition from ordinary high blood pressure: it affects the arteries carrying blood from the heart to the lungs, and it is not treated with the medicines used for systemic hypertension. Bosentan is not interchangeable with those medicines.
Important: it must not be used in pregnancy
Medicines of this class can seriously harm a developing baby. Pregnancy is excluded before treatment starts, and reliable contraception is required throughout and for a period afterwards, with regular pregnancy testing. Tell your doctor at once if you think you may have become pregnant.
Safety and monitoring
Bosentan can injure the liver, so liver function is tested before treatment and then every month throughout — this monitoring is not optional. Report yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, persistent nausea or abdominal pain at once. A blood count is also checked, as anaemia can develop. Bosentan makes hormonal contraception less reliable, so an additional or alternative method is required. Tell your doctor about increasing breathlessness, swelling of the ankles or legs, unusual tiredness or a rapid weight gain, which can mean fluid is building up. Mention every other medicine you take.
