About Mabtas 500 mg Injection
Mabtas 500 mg Injection contains rituximab, a monoclonal antibody supplied as a vial for intravenous infusion. It is prepared and given by trained healthcare staff, with monitoring during and after the infusion. It is never self-administered.
How it works
Rituximab attaches to CD20, a protein found on the surface of B cells. B cells are a type of white blood cell; they become cancerous in certain lymphomas and leukaemias, and they drive the immune attack in several autoimmune diseases. By binding to CD20, rituximab marks those cells so the body clears them from the circulation.
What it is used for
Rituximab is used in the treatment of non-Hodgkin lymphoma and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, usually with chemotherapy, and in rheumatoid arthritis that has not responded to other treatment. It is also used in granulomatosis with polyangiitis and microscopic polyangiitis. The indication, dose and schedule are decided by the treating specialist.
Important safety information
Infusion-related reactions — fever, chills, itching, flushing, breathlessness or a change in blood pressure — are most likely with the first infusion, which is why pre-medication is given and the infusion is run slowly under observation. Report any symptom during the infusion immediately. Rituximab reduces B cells and so increases the risk of infection for some months afterwards. Hepatitis B screening is carried out beforehand, because the virus can reactivate. Live vaccines should not be given during treatment, and vaccinations should be brought up to date in advance. Tell your doctor about any heart or lung condition, any current infection, planned surgery or vaccination, and all other medicines you take.
