Ujvira 100 mg Injection contains trastuzumab emtansine, supplied as a single vial for intravenous infusion. It is prepared and given by trained healthcare staff in a clinical setting.

How it works

Trastuzumab emtansine is an antibody-drug conjugate. The trastuzumab part attaches to the HER2 protein on the surface of cancer cells; the cell then takes the whole molecule inside, where the linked cytotoxic agent (DM1) is released and disrupts the cell’s internal structure, stopping it from dividing. This design delivers chemotherapy preferentially to HER2-positive cells.

What it is used for

Trastuzumab emtansine is used in the treatment of HER2-positive breast cancer, including after earlier treatment with trastuzumab and a taxane, and in the adjuvant setting where disease remains after pre-operative treatment. HER2 status must be confirmed by a validated test before treatment.

Important safety information

This medicine is not interchangeable with trastuzumab and the two must never be substituted for one another. It can affect the liver, reduce the heart’s pumping function, and lower platelet counts; liver tests, heart function and blood counts are monitored throughout treatment. It can seriously harm an unborn baby, so effective contraception is required during treatment and for a period afterwards. Tell your doctor about any lung, liver or heart problems and all other medicines you take.
