About Zecyte 250 mg Tablet
Zecyte 250 mg Tablet contains 250 mg of abiraterone acetate per tablet, supplied as a bottle of 120 tablets. Abiraterone is a hormonal anticancer medicine – an inhibitor of the enzyme CYP17. Treatment is prescribed and supervised by a cancer specialist.
How it works
Prostate cancer is usually driven by male hormones. Standard hormone treatment stops the testicles producing them, but the adrenal glands and the tumour itself can still make small amounts. Abiraterone blocks CYP17, the enzyme all three sites need, cutting off that remaining supply.
What it is used for
Abiraterone is used in prostate cancer that has spread, both disease that has stopped responding to standard hormone treatment and newly diagnosed high-risk hormone-sensitive disease. It is always taken together with a corticosteroid tablet and with ongoing androgen deprivation treatment.
Important: what this medicine is not
Abiraterone is not an antibiotic, a painkiller or a medicine for any neurological condition.
Safety and monitoring
Blocking CYP17 pushes the adrenal glands to overproduce another hormone, which raises blood pressure, lowers potassium and causes fluid retention – the corticosteroid taken alongside is what prevents this, so it must not be skipped. Blood pressure, potassium and liver function are checked before treatment and regularly during it; report swelling, muscle weakness, an irregular heartbeat, or yellowing of the eyes or skin. Food greatly increases how much is absorbed, so follow exactly the instructions you are given about when to take it in relation to meals.
Prescription and storage
A prescription from your healthcare provider is required to purchase abiraterone acetate. Store at room temperature, away from moisture and direct sunlight, and out of the reach of children.
