Description
Ziluta 150 Mg Tablet contains nilutamide 150 mg, a non-steroidal
antiandrogen used in the treatment of metastatic prostate cancer.
Prostate cancer cells depend on male hormones (androgens) to grow. Nilutamide blocks the androgen
receptor, so testosterone and dihydrotestosterone can no longer signal the tumour to divide. It does
not lower hormone levels itself, which is why it is given together with surgical castration
(orchiectomy) or alongside medical castration rather than on its own.
Licensed use
Nilutamide is indicated for metastatic (stage D2) prostate cancer, started on the same day as or
immediately after surgical castration. A common regimen is 300 mg once daily for the first 30 days,
then 150 mg once daily, but your oncologist sets the dose and duration.
Important safety information
Nilutamide carries warnings that set it apart from other antiandrogens, and they should be
understood before treatment begins.
- Interstitial pneumonitis. A new or worsening cough, breathlessness or fever must
be reported at once and the medicine stopped pending assessment. A baseline chest X-ray is usually
taken before starting. - Liver injury. Hepatitis and raised liver enzymes can occur. Liver function is
checked before treatment and at intervals during it; jaundice, dark urine or upper abdominal pain
need prompt review. - Delayed adaptation to darkness. Many patients find their eyes adjust slowly on
entering a dark room or when oncoming headlights pass. Tinted glasses help, and caution is needed
when driving at night. - Alcohol intolerance. Some patients experience flushing, malaise and low blood
pressure after drinking alcohol.
Other reported effects include hot flushes, reduced libido, nausea and gynaecomastia.
Ziluta 150 Mg Tablet is a prescription-only medicine. Use it only under the
supervision of a qualified oncologist, keep to the dose and monitoring schedule you are given, and
do not stop or change treatment without medical advice. Store below 30 °C, away from direct sunlight
and moisture, and out of the reach of children.
