Description
About Gemitrate 1 g Injection
Gemitrate 1 g Injection contains 1 g of gemcitabine per vial, supplied as a single vial. Gemcitabine is a cytotoxic chemotherapy medicine – a nucleoside analogue antimetabolite. Treatment is prescribed and supervised by a cancer specialist. It is given as an infusion by a doctor or nurse in a treatment centre, never self-administered.
How it works
Gemcitabine resembles one of the building blocks a cell needs to copy its DNA. A dividing cell takes it up in place of the real one, and DNA synthesis stops, which triggers the cell to die. Rapidly dividing cancer cells are affected most.
What it is used for
Gemcitabine is used in pancreatic cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, bladder cancer, breast cancer and ovarian cancer, alone or combined with other medicines.
Important: what this medicine is not
Gemcitabine is not an antibiotic and does not treat bacterial infection.
Safety and monitoring
It lowers blood counts, so blood is checked before each dose and fever or signs of infection need urgent attention. Flu-like symptoms, mild rash, nausea and swelling of the ankles are common. Report breathlessness or a dry cough, which can signal inflammation in the lungs, and any marked reduction in urine, unusual bruising or pallor, as a rare but serious effect on the kidneys and red cells has been described. Liver and kidney function are monitored.
Prescription and storage
A prescription from your healthcare provider is required to purchase gemcitabine. Storage and handling follow the pack instructions and are managed by the treating centre.
