Proluton Depot 250 mg Injection contains 250 mg of hydroxyprogesterone caproate in a 1 ml vial. It is a progestogen — a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone — formulated as a long-acting (depot) intramuscular injection, and is given by a doctor or nurse rather than self-administered.

How it works

Progesterone is the hormone that prepares and maintains the lining of the womb and keeps the muscle of the uterus quiet. Hydroxyprogesterone caproate acts in the same way but is released slowly from the injection site over days, so a single dose keeps hormone levels steady far longer than progesterone taken by mouth.

Hydroxyprogesterone caproate is prescribed by a specialist in pregnancy-related and gynaecological conditions, and the decision depends on the diagnosis and on national guidance.
