About Ofloxacin
Ofloxacin is a second-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat a range of bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections, respiratory infections, and eye and ear infections. It works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase, an enzyme required for DNA replication and repair in bacteria.
Ofloxacin is available in oral tablets, ophthalmic drops, and otic drops. The ophthalmic formulation (brand names include Floxin, Oflox) is commonly prescribed for bacterial conjunctivitis and corneal ulcers. Oral ofloxacin is used for urinary tract infections, prostatitis, and some sexually transmitted infections. Indian manufacturers produce ofloxacin across all formulations and in combination products with ornidazole for gastrointestinal infections.
