About Pyzina 750 mg Tablets
Pyzina 750 mg Tablets contain 750 mg of pyrazinamide per tablet, supplied as a pack of 10 tablets. Pyrazinamide is a first-line antitubercular medicine — one of the standard drugs used against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium that causes tuberculosis (TB).
How it works
Pyrazinamide enters the bacterium and is converted there into pyrazinoic acid, its active form. This disrupts the synthesis of the fatty acids the bacterium needs to build its cell wall, which kills it. Pyrazinamide is most active in acidic surroundings — the conditions found inside macrophages and within inflamed TB lesions — so it reaches bacteria that other anti-TB medicines struggle to clear.
What it is used for
Pyrazinamide is used in the treatment of tuberculosis. It is given as one component of a multi-drug regimen, typically during the intensive early phase of treatment, and the choice of regimen and its length are decided by the treating doctor based on the form of TB and the susceptibility of the bacteria.
Why it is never taken alone
Tuberculosis is treated with several medicines at once because a single drug allows resistant bacteria to survive and multiply. Taking pyrazinamide on its own, or stopping any part of the regimen early, is what produces drug-resistant TB — which is substantially harder to treat. The full course must be completed even after symptoms have settled and you feel well.
Safety and monitoring
The most important risk with pyrazinamide is liver injury. Tell your doctor promptly if you notice yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, persistent nausea, vomiting or pain in the upper abdomen, or unusual tiredness. Pyrazinamide also raises the level of uric acid in the blood, which can cause joint pain or bring on an attack of gout.
Because of this, it is not suitable for everyone: your doctor will weigh it carefully if you have liver disease or a history of gout, and may check your liver function and uric acid during treatment. Tell your doctor about all other medicines you take, and about any alcohol use, which adds to the strain on the liver. Other reported effects include stomach upset and loss of appetite.
Prescription and storage
A prescription from your healthcare provider is required to purchase pyrazinamide. Store the tablets at room temperature, away from moisture and direct sunlight, and out of the reach of children.
