Zoladex LA 10.8mg Injection is a long-acting formulation of goserelin, a synthetic analogue of naturally occurring gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). It is primarily used in the treatment of hormone-sensitive cancers, particularly advanced prostate cancer and breast cancer in premenopausal women. Goserelin works by initially stimulating the pituitary gland, leading to a surge in luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). However, with continuous administration, it paradoxically suppresses the pituitary gland’s production of LH and FSH. This suppression results in a significant reduction in the levels of sex hormones, specifically testosterone in men and estrogen in women, which are crucial for the growth of hormone-dependent tumors.
The ‘LA’ in Zoladex LA stands for ‘long-acting’, indicating that this formulation provides a sustained release of the active ingredient over an extended period, typically 12 weeks for the 10.8mg strength. This reduces the frequency of administration, improving patient compliance. Indications include advanced prostate cancer, where it helps control tumor growth by lowering testosterone levels, and advanced breast cancer in women who are premenopausal and have hormone-receptor-positive disease.
