About Metbleo 15 IU Injection
Metbleo 15 IU Injection contains bleomycin, supplied as a single vial of powder for reconstitution. It is given by a doctor or nurse, by injection or infusion.
How it works
Bleomycin is a cytotoxic antibiotic. It binds to the DNA inside dividing cells and, in the presence of iron and oxygen, causes breaks in the DNA strands, so the cell cannot divide and dies.
What it is used for
Bleomycin is used in the treatment of Hodgkin and some non-Hodgkin lymphomas, testicular and other germ-cell tumours, and certain squamous cell cancers. It is also used to treat malignant pleural effusion. It is almost always given as part of a combination regimen.
Important safety information
The most important risk with bleomycin is damage to the lungs, which can develop during or after treatment. Lung function is monitored, and the total dose a person receives over their lifetime is limited. Report any new cough, breathlessness or chest discomfort to your doctor straight away. Skin changes, darkening, fever after a dose and hair thinning are also common. Tell your doctor about any existing lung or kidney condition, about previous radiotherapy to the chest, and about all other medicines you take.
This is a prescription-only medicine. It should be used only under the supervision of a qualified healthcare professional, who will decide whether it is suitable for you and at what dose.
