Introduction to Atazanavir, emtricitabine, ritonavir, tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate
This is a combination antiretroviral therapy used to treat HIV-1 infection. Atazanavir is a protease inhibitor, Emtricitabine and Tenofovir are nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), and Ritonavir acts as a boosting agent.
How it Works:
- Atazanavir: Blocks the HIV protease enzyme, preventing the virus from maturing and multiplying.
- Emtricitabine and Tenofovir: These work by inhibiting reverse transcriptase, an enzyme HIV needs to replicate its genetic material.
- Ritonavir: Enhances the effect of Atazanavir by inhibiting its metabolism, ensuring higher drug levels.
Uses:
- Treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults and pediatric patients.
- Part of combination therapy for antiretroviral treatment-naïve or experienced patients.
Side Effects: Common side effects include:
- Nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting.
- Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes) from Atazanavir.
- Kidney issues (from Tenofovir) or liver complications.
FDA Approval:
Atazanavir was first approved by the FDA in 2003, and Emtricitabine and Tenofovir have been part of several combination therapies approved in the following years.
