Introduction to Rizatriptan
Rizatriptan is a selective serotonin receptor agonist used to treat migraine headaches.
How it Works:
Rizatriptan narrows the blood vessels around the brain and blocks pain signals from being sent to the brain, relieving migraine symptoms like headache, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound.
Uses:
Acute treatment of migraines with or without aura.
Side Effects:
- Drowsiness, dizziness, and fatigue.
- Rare but serious: serotonin syndrome, heart attack, stroke.
FDA Approval:
Rizatriptan was approved by the FDA in 1998 under the brand name Maxalt.
