Introduction to Deferasirox

Deferasirox is an oral iron-chelating agent used to treat chronic iron overload in patients who have received multiple blood transfusions, a common condition in disorders such as thalassemia, sickle cell anemia, and certain myelodysplastic syndromes. Frequent transfusions can lead to an excess accumulation of iron in the body, which can damage vital organs like the heart, liver, and pancreas. Deferasirox works by binding to excess iron in the bloodstream and allowing it to be excreted through urine and feces, thereby reducing iron levels and preventing organ damage.

One of the main advantages of deferasirox is its oral administration, offering a convenient alternative to injectable iron chelators, which significantly improves adherence to treatment, especially in children and adults who require long-term therapy. It is usually taken once daily, preferably on an empty stomach, either as a tablet for oral suspension or as a film-coated tablet, allowing flexibility based on patient preference.

While deferasirox is generally effective, it can cause side effects such as nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and skin rash. More serious risks include kidney and liver problems, so regular monitoring of kidney and liver function is essential during treatment.

Deferasirox has significantly improved the management of iron overload, making it an essential therapy for patients who require frequent blood transfusions, helping to reduce complications and improve their quality of life.
