Introduction:

Abacavir and Lamivudine are nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) used to treat HIV infection and are often used in combination with other antiretroviral drugs as part of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) or combination antiretroviral therapy (cART).  The initial FDA approval date for abacavir was December 17, 1998; and lamivudine was November 17, 1995.

Uses:

This combination is used as part of antiretroviral therapy (ART) for the treatment of HIV-1 infection.

How it Works:

Both drugs work by inhibiting the reverse transcriptase enzyme, preventing the virus from replicating.

Side Effects of Abacavir & lamivudine:

Common side effects include nausea, fatigue, headache, and rash. More severe side effects include hypersensitivity reactions, liver issues, and lactic acidosis.
