Introduction to Acetylcysteine
Acetylcysteine was approved by the U.S. FDA on July 10, 1963, as a mucolytic agent and antidote for acetaminophen overdose. It is widely used in both oral and intravenous forms.
How Acetylcysteine Works
Acetylcysteine works by breaking down the disulfide bonds in mucus, making it less viscous and easier to expel. As an antidote for acetaminophen overdose, it replenishes glutathione stores, allowing the body to detoxify the harmful metabolites of acetaminophen.
Uses of Acetylcysteine
Acetylcysteine is commonly used for:
- Mucolytic therapy in respiratory conditions like chronic bronchitis and cystic fibrosis
- Treating acetaminophen (Tylenol) overdose
- Protecting kidneys from contrast-induced nephropathy during imaging procedures
Warnings
Do not use acetylcysteine if you are allergic to it. Avoid using it if you have:
- Severe asthma (inhalation form)
- Known hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation
Precautions
Before starting acetylcysteine, inform your doctor if you
- Have a history of asthma, especially if using the inhalation form
- Have a history of gastrointestinal bleeding (for oral use)
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Your doctor may monitor liver function and respiratory status during treatment.
Side Effects
Common side effects include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Rash
- Diarrhea (oral form)
- Bronchospasm (inhalation form)
- Serious side effects may include anaphylactoid reactions, especially with intravenous use.
Advice
- If you have respiratory issues like asthma, use acetylcysteine carefully, especially in inhaled form, and under medical supervision. Do not discontinue the medication without consulting your doctor, and avoid doubling up on doses.
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their healthcare provider before starting or continuing acetylcysteine. Report any severe side effects to your doctor immediately.
- Store acetylcysteine in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, and keep it out of reach of children and pets. Ensure the solution is clear before use if in liquid form, and do not use if it has changed color.
