Introduction:

This combination of antiretroviral drugs is used to treat HIV-1 infection. Atazanavir and Ritonavir are protease inhibitors, while Lamivudine and Zidovudine are nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). Together, they prevent the virus from replicating and help maintain low viral loads.

How it Works:

Atazanavir and Ritonavir inhibit HIV protease, preventing the maturation of viral particles.

Lamivudine and Zidovudine inhibit reverse transcriptase, stopping viral RNA from converting into DNA. It targets HIV at multiple stages of its replication cycle, effectively reducing the viral load, slowing disease progression, and enhancing the immune response. The combined therapy improves treatment efficacy, helps prevent drug resistance, and simplifies dosing for better patient adherence.

Uses:

Treatment of HIV-1 infection in combination therapy.

Side Effects:

  • Nausea
  • jaundice
  • liver and kidney issues.

Precautions

Precautions while taking Atazanavir, Lamivudine, Ritonavir, and Zidovudine include regularly checking liver function. Close monitoring of kidney function is also recommended. Individuals with existing pancreas problems or taking medications should exercise caution. Blood sugar levels may need to be monitored.
