Introduction to Deferiprone
Deferiprone is an iron chelator used to treat excess iron in patients with conditions such as thalassemia major who receive frequent blood transfusions. Overcharge iron from transfusions can pile up in the body and cause damage to organs like the liver, heart, and pancreas. The U.S. FDA approved Deferiprone for iron overload on October 14, 2011. Deferiprone belongs to the medication called iron chelators, which removes excess iron from the body.

Deferiprone binds to excess iron in the body, forming a complex that is excreted in the urine and helping to reduce iron levels.
Uses of Deferiprone
Management of transfusional iron overload in patients with thalassemia or other chronic anemias.
