Introduction to Megestrol

Megestrol acetate is a synthetic progestin mainly used in the treatment of breast cancer and endometrial cancer. It is also quite popular for stimulating appetite in both cachexia and severe weight loss due to chronic diseases such as cancer or HIV/AIDS. Acting like the steroid hormone progesterone, megestrol may exert an inhibitory effect on the growth of certain tumors sensitive to the hormone.

They are available both orally and injectable, dosing depending on the condition being treated. Common side effects include weight gain, fluid retention, and mood changes. Due to hormonal effects, patients are at an increased risk for thromboembolic events and generally require close monitoring. Megestrol, an appetite stimulant, will help these patients of serious weight loss regain their strength and increase their endurance to other treatments that will help them cope with their disease and improve their quality of life.

Healthcare providers will assess the overall health condition and the possibility of drug interactions before megestrol is prescribed. They are expected to follow the prescribed regimen and attend follow-up appointments to monitor the progress of their treatments and manage any side effects.
