Introduction to Mirabegron

Mirabegron is a beta-3 adrenergic agonist indicated for the treatment of urgency, frequency, and urge incontinence that characterize symptoms of overactive bladder. It works by detrusor smooth muscle relaxation of the bladder, thus increasing capacity and reducing involuntary contractions. Its mechanism of action is different from conventional anticholinergic drugs and thus offers an option for patients who may develop side effects from conventional therapies. Clinical trials have demonstrated that mirabegron significantly improves symptoms of OAB, at least in terms of improving quality of life. It is administered once daily, without regard to food. Most common adverse events include hypertension, urinary tract infections, and headache. Blood pressure monitoring should be performed at regular intervals, particularly in patients with hypertension. Options for combination therapy with other OAB treatments for better efficacy are available.

These patients need to be counseled on the importance of medication adherence and also on the reporting of unusual symptoms or side effects. Overall, mirabegron extends an additional beneficial option for the overactive bladder patient, aiming for the improvement of urinary continence and enabling better everyday activities.
