Introduction to Prazosin
Prazosin is an alpha-1 adrenergic receptor blocker commonly used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and other conditions like benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
How it Works:
Prazosin works by relaxing blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more easily, which lowers blood pressure. It also relaxes the muscles in the prostate and bladder neck, helping men with BPH.
Uses of Prazosin
- Hypertension: Lowers blood pressure by relaxing the blood vessels.
- Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH): Helps relieve symptoms like difficulty urinating.
- PTSD-related nightmares: Prazosin has been shown to help reduce nightmares in PTSD patients.
Side Effects of Prazosin
- Dizziness or light-headedness, especially after the first dose.
- Fatigue, weakness, or palpitations.
- Some individuals may experience orthostatic hypotension (a drop in blood pressure upon standing).
FDA Approval:
Prazosin was approved by the FDA in 1976 for the treatment of hypertension
